We skipped breakfast and started at about 7 a.m., drove across the whole island and arrived at the town of Morro Jable at about 9 a.m. The place is quite touristy, but our main interest was the beach.
E02-1MorroJable-007.jpg
The beach is enormous. First you have to cross a wide belt of marshes to get to the sand and the lighthouse.
E03-1MorroJable-014.jpg
An elevated path leads from the town's main avenue to the beach.
E04-1MorroJable-017.jpg
The impressive white lighthouse towers above the beach.
E05-1MorroJable-019.jpg
To help you cross a wide belt of sand to get to the sea, there's a wooden path, but it's wobbly. Very wobbly. :)

City beaches are not really our thing, so we headed to the wilder variety. The road there leads through some spectacularly arid landscape.
E07-2PlayaSotavento-029.jpg
I took a hundred photos of this hill. :)
E08-2PlayaSotavento-041.jpg
Nothing but rock and sand and small resilient bushes.
E09-2PlayaSotavento-042.jpg
The sun kept hiding behind one single cloud, which produced a nice play of shadows.

Road.

Our Opel Corsa.
E12-2PlayaSotavento-066.jpg
The beaches of Sotavento are a windsurfer's paradise.
E13-2PlayaSotavento-070.jpg
And they are really scenic.
E14-2PlayaSotavento-078.jpg
Many people come here to windsurf.
E15-2PlayaSotavento-103.jpg
Looooong beach ...
E16-2PlayaSotavento-104.jpg
... perfect for long walks ...
E17-2PlayaSotavento-105.jpg
... with the waves gently lapping at your feet.
E18-2PlayaSotavento-109.jpg
There is a dune looming behind the beach.
E19-2PlayaSotavento-112.jpg
Climbing the dune.
E20-2PlayaSotavento-119.jpg
From the dune with a fisheye lens.
E21-2PlayaSotavento-123.jpg
The wind was quite strong but it didn't make big waves.
E22-2PlayaSotavento-125.jpg
I was standing ankle-deep in the sea to make this picture.
E23-2PlayaSotavento-127.jpg
Many people spend days just walking along several kilometers of the beach.
E24-2PlayaSotavento-130.jpg
There is so much space the beach is never crowded. Well, maybe only when the World Windsurfing Championship is held here. ;)
E25-2PlayaSotavento-132.jpg
The tide creates an interesting pattern of beach and inlets.
E26-2PlayaSotavento-147.jpg
This guy was really good - he sped along the beach and made a perfect turn.
E27-2PlayaSotavento-154.jpg
Enjoying the wind.
E28-3PuntadeJandia-171.jpg
In the afternoon we continued past Morro Jable to the south. From this lokout the city beaches can be seen.
E29-3PuntadeJandia-167.jpg
The city beach.
E30-3PuntadeJandia-169.jpg
A grid of beach umbrellas? No, thank you.
E31-3PuntadeJandia-178.jpg
The southern tip of the island is very desolate. The road isn't paved and only few people make it this far. This is the view from the lighthouse at the very end of the peninsula back towards the island.
E32-3PuntadeJandia-179.jpg
The village of Puerto de la Cruz with a single giant wind turbine.
E33-3PuntadeJandia-181.jpg
The lighthouse at Puerto de la Cruz.
E34-3PuntadeJandia-184.jpg
There's another lighthouse at a second tip of the peninsula, an even more desolate and windy one with views of the Cofete beach in the distance.
E35-3PuntadeJandia-186.jpg
The wind was so strong here I could harldy keep my camera still.
E36-3PuntadeJandia-191.jpg
Beaches of Cofete.

Patterns of the ground.
E38-3PuntadeJandia-197.jpg
From the road along the peninsula.
E39-3PuntadeJandia-201.jpg
The road is not paved but it's quite easily negotiable.
E40-4Cofete-220.jpg
We took a different turn and climbed to the pass that leads to the other side of the mountains, to the isolated beaches of Cofete.
E41-4Cofete-208.jpg
A long stretch of sand.
E42-4Cofete-219.jpg
The road the descends from the lookout at the pass is winding and narrow.
E43-4Cofete-226.jpg
A wide angle view of the beach.
E44-4Cofete-230.jpg
The traffic is sparse to say the least. ;)
E45-4Cofete-233.jpg
The village of Cofete. We didn't see one single inhabitant, just a few goats.
E46-4Cofete-235.jpg
A Cofete house.
E47-4Cofete-234.jpg
Villa Winter at the foot of the mountains.
E48-4Cofete-249.jpg
There were only a handful of swimmers at the beach.
E49-4Cofete-253.jpg
The peaks were shrouded in clouds.
E50-4Cofete-255.jpg
The beach itself was idyllic.
E51-4Cofete-257.jpg
Blue skies and white clouds and green waters.
E52-4Cofete-261.jpg
We just sat for a while and enjoyed the sound of the wind.
E53-4Cofete-263.jpg
Are you taking a photo of me?
E54-4Cofete-270.jpg
A rock in the sand.
E55-4Cofete-272.jpg
A girl was about to place a tripod in the waves. I think her camera got wet. :)
E56-4Cofete-275.jpg
Desolate, but beautiful.
E57-4Cofete-280.jpg
Cofete.
E58-4Cofete-282.jpg
I even had a photo taken of me.
E59-4Cofete-284.jpg
Seagulls.
E60-4Cofete-295.jpg
An unusual species of cacti. I have no idea what it's called.
E61-4Cofete-300.jpg
One more look from the pass and off we were to the long drive back to Corralejo.
